May 28 COVID update: Cachar reports more cases than Kamrup, becomes the highest contributor to COVID in Assam

Cachar is now one of the largest contributors to Assam’s overall COVID cases. On Friday, two sets of data were revealed, one by the deputy commissioner’s office and another by the district health department. 534 individuals in Cachar tested positive for COVID and out of them, 112 on RT-PCR while 422 on RAT. This is according to the district health department’s media bulletin, where it is stated that 7,355 samples were tested on RAT kit, and out of them, 422 tested positive reporting a 5.73% positivity rate. The health department, like always, stays away from revealing the total number of RT-PCR samples tested against which 112 were found positive.

There is another set of data for the district which is released by the District Administration Cachar – “Daily COVID19 Bulletin”. According to that data, on May 28, 2021, Cachar reported 631 COVID cases, which is the highest compared to any other districts in Assam. Out of the 631, 531 tested positive on RAT and 100 on RT-PCR. The cumulative number of tests done on May 28, according to the district administration’s bulletin is 8,613 (8046+567) which means the positivity rate stands at 7.32%.

According to the chief minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma’s tweet, Kamrup reported 595 cases on May 28. Now, why the chief minister of Assam mentioned Kamrup and not Cachar on a day when Cachar has reported the highest number of cases in the state is something that only he and his social media team can answer.

In Hailakandi district, 148 samples tested positive on Friday taking the total number of active cases to 1091. This is for the first time, Hailakandi has crossed the 1000 mark in terms of the number of active cases.

In Karimganj district, 2,931 samples were collected and out of them, 149 tested positive for COVID 19.
