Morigaon Police Arrest Silchar Woman in Coimbatore for Trafficking 3 Minors From Jagiroad

In a major breakthrough in a suspected human trafficking case, a woman from Silchar has been arrested and three minor girls rescued following an inter-state police operation linked to Jagiroad Police Station Case No. 312/25 in the Morigaon district of Assam.

The accused, Sabhita Das (approx. 29), a resident of Ashram Road, Silchar, was apprehended from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu on December 30. Acting jointly, Tamil Nadu Police and Morigaon Police from Assam arrested her and obtained transit remand before producing her in the district court after bringing her to Morigaon, Assam.

Three minor girls, aged between 16 and 17 years and all residents of Morigaon district, were rescued from Tripura and Coimbatore. The case, initially registered as a missing persons complaint at Jagiroad Police Station, has now taken the shape of a human trafficking investigation.

Sharing the details of the case, Samiran Baishya, Additional SP (Crime), Morigaon Police, said, “The lady was arrested the day before yesterday (December 30) in Coimbatore. After producing her before the local court there, we obtained transit remand and later produced her in the district court here. Three minor girls have been rescued. During interrogation, the accused revealed that she left Morigaon by train 10–15 days ago and was trying to get a huge sum of money. The girls were allegedly lured and taken to Coimbatore after money was paid to their families.”

Police have not ruled out the possibility of a sex racket or the involvement of a larger, state-level human trafficking network. Further investigation is underway to identify and apprehend other accused linked to the case.
