“Municipality board cannot do ‘Dalali’ at Gandhi Bhag” says Sushmita Dev; Protest in Park Road

Cachar District Congress has launched a massive protest against Silchar Municipality Board’s decision to build an amusement park at Silchar Gandhi Bagh. Today, Pijush Hazarika, Urban Development Minister, government of Assam is visiting Silchar Gandhi Bagh to lay foundation stone of the amusement park project.

The district congress under the leadership of former Silchar MP, Sushmita Dev blocked the road connecting Shillongpatty to Tarapur via Park Road. They have raised, Nihar Thakur Hai Hai slogans and accused the Silchar Municipality Board of acting as a broker. “Why is the municipality board leasing Government land and after consulting whom?” questioned Sushmita Dev. She accused chairman, Niharendra Narayan Tagore of running a syndicate, “Instead of running the board in a democratic manner, the chairman has cherry picked a couple of commissioners and are doing whatever they want. This is not a democratic process. No resolution was passed before taking the decision to lease government land, we protest this and will continue to do so,” said Dev.

While Pijush Hazarika is on his way to the venue, more people and associations are joining the protest, “We are in support of any renovation of Gandhi Bagh, we too want an amusement park to be built. But why do so by destroying the scenic beauty of a place with historical importance like Gandhi Bagh?” questioned Dev.

As it stands the raging protests continue in Silchar and the administration has already deployed a huge amount of security personnel. What happens once Pijush Hazarika reaches the spot, remains to be seen.
