NELECC to demonstrate in front of DC offices in all three districts of Barak Valley on September 24
Northeast Linguistic and Ethnic Coordination Committee (NELECC) is set to launch a massive demonstration on September 24, 2019. The members of the organisation had held a press conference on September 4, 2019 and informed the state and central government through the press that the Gazette Notification dated 7th September 2015 (for protection and shelter of persecuted minorities from Bangladesh and Pakistan due to religious persecution or fear of religious persecution with or without documents ) is yet to be implemented in Assam. In the same press conference, NELECC members warned that if the notification is not implemented within September 22, 2019, they will launch a massive protest.
There is no sign of the notification being implemented anytime soon and both state and the central government seems to have ignored NELECC’s demand. This has irked the members of the committee and today they have announced that they will demonstrate in front of the deputy commissioners’ office in all three districts of Barak Valley.
Serial entrepreneur and advisor of NELECC, Vivek Podder while speaking with the media said that he and the organisation is upset at the government’s silence on the implementation of the notification. “We were assured by then home minister, Rajnath Singh, BJP National Secretary, Ram Madhav and other senior leaders that the notification will be implemented in Assam as it has been done in other states of the country. We met the chief minister thrice to discuss the implementation but nothing has materialised so far,” said Podder.
He added that the committee will submit a memorandum addressing to the president of the country. “At least 14 lakh NRC rejects could get help through this notification and so it is important for us and we will urge the president to intervene and ensure that it is implemented in Assam,” added Podder.
The committee said that it would stand by the 14 lakh NRC rejects who they believe can be protected if the gazette notification is implemented. “Under the circumstances, NELECC has decided to stand with this 14 lakh people through various democratic protests and satyagraha and other peaceful demonstrations,” it concluded.
