New Twist In South Krishnapur Land Grab Row: Iqbal Denies Assault, Calls Allegations ‘False’

The alleged land dispute in South Krishnapur, Sonai, has taken a new turn after one of the accused, Iqbal Hussain Laskar, denied the allegations of assault and attempted land grabbing made by his cousin, Afia Begum Majumdar and family.

The area had earlier witnessed tension after Afia Begum Majumdar and her husband alleged that Iqbal Hussain Laskar arrived with a group of people on March 3 and attempted to forcibly occupy their ancestral land along the Silchar–Aizawl Road, allegedly assaulting family members and issuing death threats. Following the incident, they filed a case against four persons at the Silchar Sadar Police Station and sought administrative intervention.

However, speaking to the media on Friday (March 13), Iqbal Hussain Laskar claimed that the land in question actually belongs to him and that his mother had purchased it legally in 1955. He said he possesses valid land documents and has had the property for many years.

“We have land documents dating as old as 1955. My mother bought this land in 1955, but they claim that it is their land and keep on harassing us. There are 47 kathas of land, and they want to forcefully occupy it. Whenever we try to build a house here, they come and create disturbances by filing false cases,” Iqbal said.

He further alleged that in 2014, Afia Begum and her family prepared forged documents and began claiming ownership over the land. According to him, the land Afia claims belongs to them is located elsewhere.

“They have a plot of land, but this is not the one. It is somewhere else. Afsar comes and shows that he will remove me from this land. I am a single person and have no siblings like them, so it is easy for them to harass me using several tactics,” he alleged.

Iqbal also dismissed the allegation that any assault took place on March 3, calling the entire incident fabricated.

“Only Afsar, their cousin, came that day. There was no fight. They made a fake land document dated 2014 for 30 kathas. If they get this land legally, I will leave it without any say,” he added.

Expressing faith in the legal system, Iqbal said he has approached the administration seeking a swift and impartial investigation. He stated that if a court proves the land belongs to Afia Begum, he would willingly vacate it.

With both sides now making contradictory claims over ownership and the events of March 3, the dispute in South Krishnapur has moved into the domain of administrative and legal scrutiny, while residents of the area closely watch how the matter unfolds.
