New Year’s Eve Road Mishap in Silchar Leaves Local Youth Dead
A tragic incident unfolded in the E&D Colony Bazar area of Silchar, where the body of a local, identified as Arjun Das, was found under his motorcycle that had fallen into the open drain on New Year’s Day, several hours after a road accident was reported on New Year’s Eve.
According to locals, a Honda Unicorn bike was found in an accident-like condition, fallen into the drain in the area late on December 31. Traffic officials and police reached the spot at night, but the rider could not be located. The motorcycle was eventually recovered by traffic officials on the morning of January 1, when Arjun Das’s body was discovered trapped underneath the vehicle.
A local, who witnessed the situation, said that people who recognised the motorcycle tried calling Arjun Das (alias Shuna) repeatedly on New Year’s Eve, but his phone was switched off. Despite the presence of traffic officials and police at the spot that night, no one noticed anyone under the bike.
“The police had come last night and said the bike would be recovered, but it was not done then. If it had been recovered last night, maybe he could have been found earlier. We cannot be sure; this is only our speculation. The truth will come out through police enquiry,” the local stated.
Arjun Das, a resident of the Second Gate area of Tarapur, Silchar worked as a cable operator.
Visuals from the scene show that the motorcycle had fallen into a drain that was completely covered with wild foliage, plastic waste and garbage. The area had poor lighting, and the thick covering around the drain may have obstructed visibility, making it difficult to notice the body at night.
Based on the position from which the body was recovered, locals believe that the rider may have remained hidden beneath the motorcycle and surrounding waste. However, authorities have not confirmed the exact cause or time of death.
SSP Cachar, Partha Pratim Das, was contacted by Barak Bulletin for an official statement on the incident. However, he could not be reached at the time of filing this report, and therefore, no official version of events was available.
