North East International Sustainable Summit Concludes at Assam University

The North East International Sustainable Summit – 2025 concluded on Saturday (November 22) at Assam University, Silchar, marking the end of a two-day global conference dedicated to sustainable development, social equity and regional progress. Held under the slogan “Let sustainability become a household dialogue across the Nation beginning the Northeast”, the event drew researchers, scholars, policymakers and experts from India and abroad.

The summit saw participation from Illinois State University (USA), Rajshahi University and the University of Dhaka (Bangladesh), the University of Delhi, and leading universities from across Northeast India. Representatives from several prominent institutions also joined, including the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Central University of Tamil Nadu, Central University of South Bihar, Sikkim University, Sikkim Manipal University, USTM, Down Town University, Don Bosco University, Assam Royal Global University, Tura Christian College and Malda College of West Bengal. Many international scholars participated virtually, adding a diverse global perspective to the deliberations.

Across eight thematic academic sessions, experts discussed issues such as social inequality and empowerment, environmental conservation, displacement and indigenous knowledge, women and youth development, climate resilience, sustainable innovation, economic growth, wetland management, handloom and handicrafts, sustainable livelihood, cultural psychology, entrepreneurship, connectivity, infrastructure and regional stability.

Convener Dr Lalzo S. Thangjom and Coordinator Prof. M. Tineshowri Devi extended their gratitude to partner institutions, participants and sponsors for their support. The summit, organised under the guidance of Vice Chancellor Prof. Rajive Mohan Pant, received strong backing from the North Eastern Council (NEC) and the Ministry of DoNER. NEC officials L. S. Gangte, Bamin Tarang and Satindra Kumar Bhalla were present and played significant roles. The Assam Pollution Control Board, led by Dr Arup Kumar Mishra, also partnered in the event, contributing to the summit’s focus on environmental sustainability.

The conference concluded with a collective call to make sustainability an everyday conversation starting from the Northeast and extending across the country.
