Not Hit and Run but brutal Murder: Cachar SP confirms lady was killed and head-less body was dumped on Kathal Road
Hairpin turn of Cachar Police in the November 7 headless dead body case that was found in Kathal Road. On November 7, when the headless dead body of a woman was seen by the locals of Kathal Road’s Chandrapur area in Cachar, it certainly created fear and gore among the people of the area. When police reached the spot, Rangirkhari police station’s SI Subimal Nath said it looked like a hit-and-run case to him. From the prima facie information, the Cachar Police also negated it being a murder case.
Sources in the Cachar Police on the morning of November 7 said, “There is no evidence to suggest a murder. This looks like a hit-and-run by a tipper truck. This road is used by the loaded dumpers and one of them could have crushed the female.” Even though the police said, “we aren’t ruling out anything at this stage, as we are waiting for the post-mortem reports”, the possibility of this case being a murder was nowhere on the books of the police.
After the postmortem and in the words of SP Numal Mahatta, a “serious and deep investigation”, the police took a different turn in this case. The SP in a press briefing had declared it to be a murder case and said, “The case on 7 November happened late at night and the body was unidentified. But later her daughter identified the dead mother. We were not sure whether it was a murder or an accident so we launched the investigation accordingly. During our investigation, we found two individuals named Bijoy Das and Bikram Das and apprehended them. During the interrogation of the two apprehended, we found that the two have killed the person who was later identified as Jharna Pandey, 36 years old”.
Sharing the chain of events, the SP said, “Bijoy Das, the accused is an auto-driver by profession and on the night of November 6 both Bijoy Das along with Bikram Das and the deceased were intoxicated and drinking alcohol near the national highway. While they were returning from that spot in Bijoy Das’s auto, they had a fight between them which resulted in shoving and elbowing. The fight took a different turn when Bijoy Das became aggressive and pushed Jharna Pandey in front of a speeding vehicle on the highway. Bijoy Das has confessed that, Jharana Pandey was defaced after she was run over by a vehicle”.
The senior APS Officer further added, “After the body was run over, the accused with the help of Bikram Das dumped the body of the deceased in Kathal Road’s Chandrapur. This was done to make it look like a hit and run case”.
SP Mahatta has also informed that the two accused has been held under arrest, the auto bearing registration number AS11BC926 has been apprehended and taken into the custody of the Cachar Police. The SP then assured that any other accused, if found, will be held under arrest by the police and strict actions will be taken against them. As per the note of APS Mahatta, the two accused were arrested with sufficient evidence and have been produced in the court.
