Now Mizos claim Cachar’s Frenchnagar, Paglacherra should be within Mizoram territory, deploys force
July 26, many thought the death of six Assam Police Personnel would bring an end to the Assam – Mizoram territorial dispute. It would be an end of Mizo-aggression that has been going on since the birth of Mizoram. Many thought, it would bring peace. Assam handed over the check post where six of its personnel in uniform were killed, by the Mizoram. Mizo forces guard that post and there is no sense of consolation or regret in the way the spot has been manned.
It was decided on August 5, in an agreement signed in Aizawl, that status quo must be maintained until the dispute is settled. Mizos have built a village in an around the spot where the 43 Assam Police Personnel sustained bullet injuries after Mizo forces opened fire with machine guns. SP Cachar, Vaibhav Chandrakant Nimbalakar sustained bullet injury and had to be airlifted, his PSO was shot dead.
On Friday, the Mizos unleashed another round of aggression. This time, it was at Frenchnagar, Paglacherra area. As per the agreement, Cachar Police along with PWD, Forest Division, Contractor who has submitted his bid and got the contract, went to Frenchnagar to construct a Border Outpost for the security of the locals. Before they could even start their work, Mizo Police encountered the unit and pushed them back. As always, aggressive body language and high decibel warnings forced Cachar Police and other administrative officials to retreat.
After being pushed back from there, Cachar Police and the officials earmarked the playground of Khasiapunji LP School to construct the Border Outpost. This spot is at least 500 metres away from the border. However, the work stopped. Yesterday, there was a meeting between the officials of Assam and Mizoram at the Khasipunji LP School. What was discussed in the meeting remains unknown, but sources confirmed that the Mizos don’t want Cachar Police to construct the post at the playground of Khasipunji LP School.
The locals feel that Assam Police will concede again and construct the border outpost somewhere in Frenchnagar where there are families residing already.
Frenchnagar, Paglacherra, Khasiapunji are all area within the territory of Assam. Mizoram continues to question the constitutional boundaries of Assam and Assam continues to concede to the aggression. Lailapur, Khulicherra, Paglacherra, Frenchnagar, residents of these areas have been pleading for a solution but the governments continue to ignore their woes.
