NRC: “Genuine citizens are rejected and illegal immigrants are celebrating”: Kabindra Purkayastha
A total of 3,11,21,004 residents have their names in NRC leaving out 19,06,657 including those who did not submit their claims. Total No of Applicants as per Assam NRC’s official statement was 3,30,27,661.
Veteran BJP leader and former union minister Kabindra Purkayastha shared his disappointment on NRC. He was of the opinion that the NRC failed to fulfil its promise of making Assam a Bangladeshi free state. Purkayastha said that he is hopeful that both State and Central Government will do their best to ensure that the efforts put to conduct the NRC result in something positive. He said at this stage it seems like an unsatisfactory effort.
“The illegal immigrants are celebrating as their name is there in the draft while genuine citizens are rejected a spot,” Purkaystha asserted. This is not what we thought NRC will be. He added that he is hopeful the government will provide necessary aid to the ones who could not make it to the final draft.
When asked if it was not his own party and government’s fault that NRC did not live up to expectation, Purkayastha replied, “The NRC was conducted under the superintendentship of the honourable Supreme Court and so the government or BJP had very little to say. If it was conducted by the government I am sure the story would have been different,” he added.
The veteran BJP politician said he is optimistic that government will do something to have a better and fairer version of NRC.
