“OC Badarpur Closed, will report to Headquarters for further probe,” SP Karimganj; SI Nilambazar to be the interim OC

Following public outrage, Karimganj SP, Partha Protim Das had asked the DSP Headquarters to report to the spot and conduct an initial query. Based on the information provided by the DSP, the SP has initiated action against OC Badarpur, Chandan Goswam.

“OC Badarpur has been closed and he will now report to the state Police headquarters in Guwahati for further investigation. Meanwhile, SI Nilambazar will be the interim OC of Badarpur until further notice,” said Karimganj SP, Partha Protim Das while speaking with Barak Bulletin.

The action comes after Chandan Goswami, the outgoing OC of Badarpur Police Station, opened fire today at Badarpur Bazar. He was on his way to detain one accused identified as Rahul Ahmed. However, as per Police sources, Ahmed snatched a butcher’s knife and tried to attack the Police. That is when in retaliation, the Police opened fire.

Irked by OC’s action, the local public launched a protest in the area and blocked the main road disrupting vehicular traffic. DSP Karimganj went to the spot and met with the local protesters. As per sources, the locals explained the situation to the DSP, shared cases of Police atrocities against poor and marginalised in the area.

In fact, OC Chandan Goswami is accused of assaulting and detaining a vegetable vendor who he is yet to release. DSP heard it all and then conducted an initial enquiry, following which shared his preliminary report with the SP. Based on the report and keeping public sentiment at the forefront, the SP has decided to close the officer in charge of the Badarpur Police Station.

Meanwhile, the protesters got to know about the decision against OC Chandan Goswami and decided to withdraw the road blockade.
