Old video of a bridge washed away in river from East Timor, Indonesia viral in Barak Valley with misleading claims

An old, unrelated video clip which shows that an iron frame bridge is being washed away by ravaging river is being shared on Facebook with misleading claim. The video is creating panic among the people of Barak Valley. Barak Valley is facing severe situation due to rising flood situation due to heavy rainfall since few days. Barak Bulletin has found that the video clip is actually from 2021 and was recorded in East Timor Island or in Indonesia.

A Facebook page named Barak Valley Live has posted a video clip of 21 second, which shows that a soaring river is blowing away an Iron Frame bridge with the caption “Mother Nature. Somewhere in Haflong” The post has been viewed by almost 87 thousand times so far and has earned many reactions from the netizens. It is being widely shared in Barak Valley causing panic among the residents who are already worried because of the flood.

Barak Bulletin has fact checked the video and found that the video is old; it was recorded in April 2021 in Indonesia’s East Timor Island. The place was hit with a devastating cyclone that time and the video was recorded by some local people.

Barak Bulletin has used InVid tool and fragmented the video into key frames and performed reverse image search with Google and Yandex tool and found several links of news article with the same thumbnail.

Barak Bulletin has found an article from Australia’s ABC news organization carrying the same clip. According to CNN international a cyclone hit the areas of East Timor and Indonesia on April 5, 2021, the Flash floods unleashed by torrential rains killed 41 people on the Indonesia and East Timor islands.

 

 

We have also found an article by Bali Live news portal which claims that the instances of bridge being blown away are from East Timor Island.

Barak Bulletin has also found a tweet from April 5, 2021 featuring the same clip which only confirms that the clip is old and is recorded somewhere in East Timor or in Indonesia. The tweet can be seen here, the archive version can be accessed here.

Therefore, it can be confirmed that this video has nothing to do with the recent flood situation of Barak valley and No iron bridge has been blown away by Barak River so far.
