Overspeeding bus collides with a tree in Hailakandi, Leaves 20 Injured
A severe bus accident occurred today in Hailakandi’s Monacherra area, resulting in injuries to over 20 passengers. The bus, operating under the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC), was ferrying passengers from Karimganj’s Nivia area to Silchar via Hailakandi when it lost control and crashed into a tree.
Eyewitnesses reported that the bus, with registration number AS24C5399, was overspeeding and lost control while crossing a speed breaker. The force of the collision shattered the front windshield, broke the dashboard, and severely dented the front of the vehicle. The driver and the handyman of the bus sustained severe injuries, with the driver reportedly breaking both legs in an attempt to avert the crash.
Locals at the scene described the tree as a crucial factor in mitigating the accident’s impact, suggesting that the situation could have been much worse if not for the tree acting as a shock absorber. The tree itself was partially uprooted due to the collision.
All injured passengers were promptly transported to SK Roy Civil Hospital in Hailakandi for treatment and first aid. Out of the 20 passengers, approximately five were reported to have sustained severe injuries.
This incident highlights the need for stricter enforcement of speed limits and better road safety measures to prevent such accidents in the future. The community’s quick response in providing aid and support to the injured passengers is commendable.
