Police arrests Anik Das, Pallab Das, for looting Shani Temple in Silchar, recovers jewellery

In a swift breakthrough, Cachar Police arrested two accused within 24 hours of the daring theft and vandalism at National Highway Point’s Shani Temple in Silchar. The Friday late night and Saturday early morning (August 16) incident, where miscreants looted jewellery and damaged the idol of Lord Shani, had sparked outrage among devotees.

According to Cachar Police, the arrested have been identified as Anik Das (27), son of Ajit Das of Chalta Basti PHE Tilla under Dwarbond Police Station area, and Pallab Das (26), son of Tapan Das of Silcoorie Camp No. 7, under Ghungoor thana area. Both were apprehended during the course of the investigation.

Police informed that a gold chain, the golden eye of the idol, and two silver bracelets have been recovered so far. Forensic, fingerprint, and technical analyses were conducted at the temple, which played a crucial role in identifying the culprits.

Cachar SSP Numal Mahatta, briefing the press on Sunday, said, “When we received the information of this incident, we jumped into the investigation without any delay. Through technical analysis, forensic investigation and fingerprint evidence, we were able to nab the culprits within 24 hours. Anik Das, who had recently been released from jail after a crime under Dwarbond Thana, was the prime accused. He committed the theft with the help of Pallab Das. They even attempted to sell the ornaments to a jeweller, who has also been apprehended. Most of the stolen goods have been recovered and we are confident of recovering the rest soon.”

Interestingly, CCTV footage retrieved from inside the temple showed Anik Das bowing down before Lord Shani moments before committing the crime.

Responding to allegations of inadequate night patrolling, SSP Mahatta addressed public concerns and assured that police patrolling in Silchar city will be enhanced for better safety.

During the early hours of Saturday, a group of people also attempted to block the road in protest of the theft, but the situation was quickly brought under control by police intervention.
