Police taking strict action against those violating lockdown protocols in Barak Valley

People of Barak Valley refuse to take the lockdown seriously. From Karimganj’s Fakira Bazaar to Fatak Bazaar in Silchar or Sonabarighaat Bazaar in Sonai, instances of people coming out in large numbers have surfaced on Social Media several times. The Prime Minister with joined hands requested Indians to stay indoors and help the administration, doctors fight the global pandemic. Yet people remained callous and came out on the roads for all lame and avoidable reasons.

Things went bizarre the other day in Sonabarighat when an AISF constable allegedly got lynched by a mob at a fully functional market in the morning. Mob and functional markets are both felonies in this time and then the alleged murder. It is chaos and carnage. More than a thousand gathered in Fatak Bazaar in one of the days and Himanta Biswa Sarma, health minister of Assam said, “This won’t be tolerated again.” Yesterday also during his press conference he mentioned, “Despite constant messages, Fatak Bazaar opened again and then I had to call the DC of Cachar. Grocery stores are opened at every lane yet people are gathering at wholesale stores” added Sarma.

Today all three districts of Barak Valley decided to take strict actions against those violating the lockdown protocols. In Cachar, OC of Silchar Sadar Police Station led a drive against people violating the lockdown. In several areas, police officials resorted to lathi-charge.

In Hailakandi the Police officials started seizing vehicles and arresting offenders. Today the district administration informed that 17 individuals were arrested, 31 vehicles got seized for violating lockdown rules.

Deputy Speaker of Assam, Aminul Haque Laskar warned the residents of the valley that the Police will take stern actions against those who refuse to abide by the lockdown rules. Yet people showed up on the streets.

Karimganj Administration has also asked police to take strict actions. Anbamuthan MP, DC  Karimganj said, “We aren’t arresting anyone as of now, because it will lead to unnecessary human contact etc. But we are enforcing thoroughly.”

The administration has made it clear that actions will be taken against anyone who violates lockdown protocols. So, it remains to be seen, if after Police’s action the residents stop leaving their homes or respective lanes for unnecessary actions.
