PWD carries out eviction drive at Meherpur

Public Works Department (PWD), in presence of magistrate, today carried out major eviction drive at Meherpur, Silchar, to free up the government land from illegal constructions and buildings. Eviction drive was carried out near the Vivekananda cooperative area of Silchar medical road.

Taking the help of JCBs, the eviction team demolished all such constructions which encroached over the government land. Many shops, poles, signboards were turned down during the drive. Heap of sand which were lying near road side were lifted and put over the road pits.

A magistrate who was assigned for the task, while speaking to BarakBulletin said, the PWD has undertaken this drive to free up the encroached land and to facilitate the expansion of road in near future. “I have been assigned to assist the PWD officials in this eviction drive, as people often resist and create trouble during such eviction drive” said the magistrate, on terms on anonymity.

This drive was probably in lines with the Silchar MLA Dilip Paul’s proposal to convert the existing Ranghirkhari to Medical point road into 4 lane road. MLA Paul recently along with the top PWD officials visited the road and inspected the feasibility of the project.
