Rajya Sabha: TMC MP – Silchar’s Sushmita Dev among the 19 MPs Suspended for the rest of the week

All India Trinamool Congress’ Sushmita Dev in among the 19 MPs from the Rajya Sabha have been suspended for the rest of the week because of “unparliamentary” conduct. The suspended MPs claimed that they have been demanding an urgent discussion on issues like price rise and GST for the past several weeks.

Sushmita Dev, AITC MP (Rajya Sabha) stated in an interview that the Opposition had been following the appropriate procedure for weeks to pave the way for a discussion about the same but all their efforts were scrapped by the ruling government. She has said the constant refusal to address burning questions about the government’s economic policies is against the basic tenet of democracy.

The opposition has demanded that the discussions be held under Rule 267 (Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Rajya Sabha). The rule states that certain issues must be taken up by suspending the business list of the day.

However, the suspension of the MPs was authorised according to Number 256 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business, which states that the chairman may suspend a member from the service of the council provided that the period doesn’t exceed the remainder of the parliamentary session.

The suspensions were handed out after the opposition leaders raised slogans and displayed placards against the ruling government. “GST wapas lo” and “Gujarat CM resign karo” were some of the slogans raised during the whole demonstration.
