Region to witness ‘extreme cold waves’ DDMA asks Municipality to provide shelter to homeless
In a matter of relief for the homeless and destitute of Silchar area, Cachar District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), in a letter to Silchar Municipality Board and District Social Welfare Department, has asked them to provide shelter to the homeless at Silchar under Silchar Municipal area as the region is likely witness ‘extreme cold waves’ in next couple of days.
The letter stated, “with reference to the subject cited above, I would like to state that based on IMD forecast, Silchar town and its peripheral areas are likely to witness extreme cold waves for the next few days. Here it is very disheartening to see the homeless people are suffering and trying to survive in such extreme climatic conditions.”
It further added, “In this connection, you are requested to make the Urban Shelter Homes functional or any such place ready for the homeless people so that they can at least take Shelter during the night time at such place.”
Though it is a good initiative by Disaster Management authority, what comes as a challenge is, there are no such shelter homes under Silchar Municipal area as confirmed by one SMB source. So how the authorities execute the plan will be a thing to watch.
