Rs. 1 Lakh Cash And Bike Dowry Demand Led To Wife’s Death: Cachar Court Sentences Husband To 10 Years’ Jail
The District and Sessions Court of Cachar has sentenced a 34-year-old man to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment in a dowry-related wife murder case. The verdict was delivered by Additional Sessions Judge (Fast Track Court) Bankim Sharma on Monday, January 19, 2026.
The convict has been identified as Tuton Das (34), a resident of Leburbond under Silchar Sadar Police Station.
The case dates back to February 21, 2021, when the hanging body of Tuton’s wife, Chanchala Das, was recovered from the kitchen of their house at Leburband. Chanchala’s parental home is at Basudebpur in the Borjalenga area. The following day, her brother Binod Das lodged an FIR, alleging that Chanchala was murdered for dowry.
According to the FIR, Chanchala married Tuton on December 2, 2019. Soon after the marriage, Tuton, allegedly instigated by other family members, began pressuring her to bring Rs. 1 lakh in cash and a motorcycle from her parental home. When Chanchala expressed her inability to meet the demands, she was allegedly subjected to continuous physical and mental torture.
The complaint further stated that Chanchala informed her family about the harassment, after which her relatives visited her in-laws’ house and requested them to stop the torture, citing their inability to fulfil the dowry demands. However, the alleged harassment intensified thereafter.
On the day of the incident, Chanchala’s in-laws reportedly informed her family over the phone that her condition was very serious. When her relatives rushed to the house, they found her body hanging in the kitchen. In the FIR, her brother expressed his firm belief that Tuton and other accused persons had strangled Chanchala to death and later staged the incident as a suicide.
Based on the FIR, Cachar Police registered a case and conducted an investigation. After completion of the probe, trial proceedings began against Tuton. Following the conclusion of the trial, the court held him guilty under Section 304(B) of the Indian Penal Code (dowry death) and sentenced him to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs. 20,000. In default of payment of the fine, he will have to undergo an additional six months’ imprisonment.
The public prosecutor in the case was Pradeep Kumar Patowary, while Nihar Ranjan Das and Shaoli Sharma appeared on behalf of the defence.
