Rs. 16 Crore Trading Scam: Hailakandi Police Arrest One Mastermind, Two Remain on the Run
Hailakandi Police have uncovered a significant trading scam involving Rs. 16 crore, allegedly orchestrated by 29-year-old Dipanjan Nath. Operating under the name Finsurge Trading, Nath was arrested from College Road in Hailakandi. The scheme has allegedly affected around 200 victims across Barak Valley, marking it as one of the region’s largest financial frauds in recent years.
Dipanjan Nath has been charged under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The scam enticed individuals with promises of high returns—offering Rs. 1.8 lakh for every Rs. 1 lakh invested within a month. Victims report that the fraudulent scheme primarily targeted youths, collecting money from various parts of Barak Valley.
As per reports, the investigation commenced after a formal complaint was filed by Joydeep Paul, who alleged that he never received his promised returns. An FIR has been registered under case number 18/2025 at Hailakandi Police Station.
Sources indicate that alongside Dipanjan Nath, two other individuals, Partha Pratim Debnath and Raja Dey, are suspected to be the masterminds behind the scam. Both are currently absconding. Documents have surfaced showing that money was lent to Partha Pratim Debnath by several individuals.
The scam allegedly spans across Barak Valley, with victims from Hailakandi, Cachar, and beyond. Reports suggest around 200 people were duped into investing, resulting in losses totalling Rs 16 crore.
Partha Pratim Debnath, who is currently absconding, is from Kailashahar in Unokoti district, Tripura, while Raja Dey hails from Srikona in Cachar. Dipanjan Nath, who is now in custody, is from Hailakandi. Despite coming from different locations, the trio executed the entire scheme from Silchar, where they reportedly operated an office at Rangirkhari. According to our sources, Silchar served as the central hub for their fraudulent activities.
Barak Bulletin attempted to contact Partha Pratim Debnath, but his phone was switched off. Efforts to reach Hailakandi SP Leena Doley for an official comment also proved unsuccessful, as her phone line remained busy.
This is a developing story, and the investigation by the police into the matter is ongoing. Further details are awaited.
