Shaan on Guwahati issue: Don’t make a political issue out of one minor incident
Every mouth that has a tongue has voiced an opinion on the incident in Sarusajai stadium in Guwahati. As ace singer Shaan (Shantanu Mukherjee) started singing a medley of ‘Musu Musu Hasi’ and ‘Prithibi Bodle Geche’ on stage on Sunday night. Some section in the audience shouted at him to not sing Bengali songs. Eventually, someone threw something on the stage. Shaan lost his composure and threw it back in the same direction and said, ‘Assam is a part of India and not only a state’. He opined every performer must be respected and no one should ever throw anything on the stage. He started singing his famous Bollywood number but stopped in the middle and said ‘Bihu Karte Hain’ and did ‘Kene ba kene ba’ naase’.
The video footage of this unfortunate incident started doing rounds on Social Media and it acted as a fuel in the ongoing tiff between the large section of Barak and Brahmaputra Valley. Intellectuals in both Barak and Bramhaputra started writing columns, “Don’t make a political issue out of a small incident,” says the singer. He adds, “I have moved on.” He refused to speak more about it and instead said he had great fun in Assam barring that one unfortunate incident.
There were stories which suggested that stones were thrown at him, he went on public to call those stories ‘lies’, and clarified it was just one piece of paper ticket. He was quoted in Indian Express saying, “I don’t really want to fan the incident further. It was an unfortunate incident. What happened was a little disappointing at that moment, and I couldn’t help but react on stage. I have moved on from the incident and don’t want to further talk about it. All I want to say is that don’t politicise, and create a barrier between a state and culture.”
Shaan also shared a series of tweets voicing his thoughts:
Just for the records …loved my Assam Tour!! Saw the most fascinating sights…made new friends..had huge turnouts at every concert.. Over one unfortunate incident it would be VeryWrong to Tarnish this Beautifull State!!! Whatever happened was in the heat of the moment 🙏 https://t.co/2pcE1IUYLe

My outcry was not directed to that One Individual but to all who are harbouring these ‘Regional Devide’ Sentiments!! The Youth must not fall into this trap #StayUnited https://t.co/Wl548iWF2U
