Silchar: Addict Thief Escapes From Cachar Police Custody After Being Caught Red-Handed In Kanakpur

In a shocking turn of events, an alleged habitual thief who was caught red-handed by locals in Kanakpur Part 2 on Wednesday morning managed to escape police custody later in the day.

The accused, identified as Sujit Das, a resident of Maa Durga Lane in Kanakpur, was allegedly caught while attempting a theft during the early hours of July 23. Locals, who claim he is an addict with a record of stealing from the very neighbourhood he resides in, apprehended him and handed him over to the Rangirkhari Outpost.

“He lives in a rented house and often targets homes in the area. This time, we caught him red-handed,” a resident told Barak Bulletin.

Upon searching his home, residents allegedly recovered four mobile phones, seven SD memory cards, and two gold bangles, believed to have been stolen from multiple households in the vicinity.

However, the situation took a dramatic twist when Sujit Das managed to escape from the Rangirkhari Town Outpost. According to sources, he pushed a Cachar Police officer and fled from custody. As of Wednesday night, he remains absconding.

Cachar Police, however, has said that they have received no such reports of any theft, let alone a thief escaping from their custody.
