Silchar-Aizawl road waterlogged with knee-deep water, locals call for road blockade

Heavy downpour this week has inundated the Silchar-Aizawl National Highway with water from the heavy downpour. This has become a treacherous ordeal paralyzing daily traffic and commute. The bustling roadway now resembles a waterlogged marshland and hazard zone for daily travel. The section of road between Auliya Bazar to Sonai Road with potholes brimming with water poses a serious hazard for two wheelers in particular.

The blocked drains on the sidewalks stagnate the rainwater from clearing out. The National Highway to the neighboring state Mizoram remains underwater and what’s more troubling is the lack of swift action from authorities to address the crisis. Despite repeated pleas from the public, including frustrated commuters and concerned residents, there has been no tangible response from the district administration or local representatives.

A college student sharing their ordeal to our reporter on Friday morning said, “After every short spell of rain, there is knee-deep water on the road. It poses difficulties for us to reach our classes on time. Our dress gets dirty, we can’t wear our school shoes because of the water logging. We have sent repeated requests to the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar for his prompt action on this but got no response from his office”. The youths gathered this morning warned of road blockade if the drains are not cleared and a solution in this regard is not chalked.

Several accidents have also been reported from this road this week. As frustrations mount and safety concerns escalate, residents fear that unless urgent measures are taken to alleviate the waterlogging and improve drainage, a wave of protests may soon sweep through the affected areas.
