Silchar Man Allegedly Stabbed to Death in Tarapur Over Land Dispute
Silchar witnessed a shocking incident on Friday night (August 1) after a man was brutally stabbed to death in Tarapur’s Malinibeel area over an alleged land dispute. The victim has been identified as Sarabindu Baishnab, who was stabbed just a day after he had lodged a complaint against those accused who killed him on Friday.
According to reports, three youths — Rahul Baishnab, Samiran Baishnab and Rabindra Baishnab — allegedly attacked Sarabindu with a knife while he was on his way to the police station on Friday. The victim’s wife, Promila Baishnab, alleged that the trio, along with their relative,s had been harassing their family for a long time to grab their land illegally.
Promila claimed that the accused had been threatening them for weeks and that Sarabindu had lodged a complaint at Tarapur Police Station just a day before the incident. “We are poor people who worked hard in Meghalaya for years to buy this land. They wanted to drive us out and take it away. Yesterday, the police had called us to the station to discuss the matter, but on the way, they intercepted my husband and stabbed him in the chest. He died on the spot,” she said in her statement.
Promila also alleged that the accused are relatives of the land’s former owner, Bisha Baishnab, who sold the plot to them. “After selling the land, Bishwa’s sisters settled in his adjacent house and started harassing us. We have tolerated this for a long time and even asked our neighbour what to do. They advised us to stay silent and not act, as they were dangerous people. But they would attack us with sharp weapons and threaten to kill us. We complained to the police as we were helpless,” she added.
Tarapur Police have registered a case of murder based on the FIR lodged by Promila Baishnab against Rahul Baishnab, Samiran Baishnab, Rabindra Baishnab and others. The police failed to protect the victim who complained of torture, the day before he was murdered.
Sarabindu Baishnab is survived by his wife and three children — a 13-year-old son, a 5-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter.
