Silchar Municipal Board Upgraded to Corporation; New Jurisdiction Effective from September 2

In a landmark development for urban governance in Barak Valley, the Silchar Municipal Board has officially been upgraded to the Silchar Municipal Corporation, marking a significant expansion of its administrative jurisdiction. The move follows the Assam Gazette notification dated November 28, 2024, which announced the enhancement of Silchar’s civic body to a full-fledged Municipal Corporation.

With this upgradation, several new areas have been incorporated under the Silchar Municipal Corporation, thereby extending its boundaries and expanding the scope of urban services. This development is expected to bring better infrastructural facilities, streamlined urban planning, and improved civic amenities to the newly included localities.

As per the official notification issued by the Commissioner of Silchar Municipal Corporation, Srishti Singh, IAS, all land sale permissions and building construction approvals will now be processed and granted exclusively by the office of the Commissioner within the entire jurisdiction of the Silchar Municipal Corporation. Residents, developers, and stakeholders within the expanded municipal limits are required to adhere to this directive for all future land and building-related approvals.

The order will come into effect on September 2, 2025, ushering in a new phase of structured urban governance for Silchar. The creation of the Municipal Corporation is seen as a significant step towards strengthening urban infrastructure and ensuring systematic development to meet the growing demands of the city and its adjoining areas.

Speaking on the development, Commissioner IAS Srishti Singh said, “This upgradation reflects the growing importance of Silchar as an urban hub. Our goal is to deliver efficient governance, better infrastructure, and improved civic services to all areas under the new corporation limits.”

This was stated in a press release issued by the Regional Office of Information & Public Relations, Barak Valley Zone, Silchar, Assam.
