Silchar Press Club Demands Immediate Arrest of Abub Ahmed Mazumdar for Brutal Assault on Journalist
In a disturbing incident that has raised concerns over the safety of journalists, the Silchar Press Club has submitted a memorandum to Cachar Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta, demanding immediate action against Abub Ahmed Mazumdar for his violent assault on journalist Samin Sen Deka. The club has strongly condemned the attack and warned that if justice is not served swiftly, they will escalate their protests and take the matter to higher authorities.
The memorandum, handed over on 4 January 2025, highlights the brutal assault on Deka, a correspondent for the Guwahati-based satellite channel Pratidin Time. The attack, which took place on 2 January, has sparked outrage among journalists across Barak Valley.
In their demands, the Silchar Press Club has called for:
1. The immediate arrest of Abub Ahmed Mazumdar.
2. A comprehensive investigation into threats issued by Mazumdar to journalists and their families.
3. Assurance of protection for journalists in Cachar district.
4. A public statement from Cachar Police condemning the assault and affirming their commitment to press freedom.
Following the submission of the memorandum, Silchar Press Club General Secretary Shankar Dey expressed grave concern over the inaction by law enforcement. He questioned how Mazumdar was released so quickly after his detention, despite his known criminal background.
Cachar SP Numal Mahatta acknowledged receipt of the memorandum and assured journalists that a thorough investigation would be conducted. “Based on our investigation, all those involved in the assault will be punished according to the law,” Mahatta stated while addressing media.
The attack on Samin Sen Deka has sent shockwaves across the state. On 2 January, Deka was lured to Mazumdar’s office in Silchar under the pretext of discussing an exclusive story. Once inside, he was reportedly locked in a room and assaulted by Mazumdar and his accomplices.
Deka’s 2022 coverage of Mazumdar’s involvement in the Burmese betel nut smuggling racket is believed to be the motive behind the assault. During the attack, Mazumdar threatened to frame Deka in false cases and warned him to stop reporting in Silchar. Journalists across Barak Valley have condemned the attack, demanding that Mazumdar be held accountable.
