Silchar Shocker: Schoolgirl Abducted in Broad Daylight, Panic Grips Town
Crime rates in the valley are constantly on the rise. A shocking case of abduction in broad daylight has sent shockwaves across Silchar town. A Class 10 student of Town High School, located in Silchar’s Steamer Ghat Road, identified as Rumana Begum, was allegedly abducted by four youths in a car from right outside her school premises on Friday (July 4) morning.
According to eyewitnesses, Rumana and her younger cousin, Parvina Begum Laskar, were walking towards their school when a four-wheeler suddenly pulled up near the gate of Silchar Town High School from Dhakai Patty. In a matter of seconds, three of the men reportedly dragged Rumana into the vehicle and fled, leaving behind her horrified cousin.
“The girls were on their way to school when the car stopped, and three men forced Rumana into it. When the younger sister tried to intervene, she was pushed away,” said Hussain Ahmed Mazumder, a teacher at the school. “There were no shops open at that time, and very few people on the road. The sister immediately informed their parents, who rushed to the spot and reported the matter to Malugram Thana.”
Rumana is originally from Hailakandi and was staying on rent with her family in the Ghaniwala area of Silchar.
The incident has triggered panic among students, parents, and residents of the area, especially since it occurred during school hours in a crowded part of town. Cachar Police have launched an investigation into the matter and are taking statements from the victim’s cousin and other possible witnesses.
Efforts are on to identify the car and nab the culprits. However, the motive behind the abduction remains unclear.
This incident has also sparked questions about the safety of women and girls in the town.
As of the time of filing this report, no arrests had been made. Search operations are ongoing.
