Silchar’s St Capitanio School announced runner up at zonal CBSE U-14 girls’ chess championship

St. Capitanio Sr. Secondary School Chess Team created ripples through out North East by qualifying for the Under 14 Girls’ Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) National level. Appearing for the first time in the Zonal competition, the team lifted the second prize in the (CBSE) Far East Zone. CBSE Far East Zone includes West Bengal, Orissa, and Chhattisgarh in addition to the eight states of North East India.

Lead by team captain Shuktara Samkalpa, the three member team including Ruptalin Teronpi, and Jaysmita Dutta will now play with the other winners and runners’ up of the nine different CBSE Zones to be held in Delhi this November. In the four board tournament, St Capitanio team played with three players, and thus started one match down in every round, and in National Level also they have to continue with this disadvantage. Saturday, evening, Chief Arbiter Mr P. K. Roy and Dr. Sangeeta Chatterjee, Principal, Guwahati Public School handed over the trophy to the team-members.

Laxmipat Singhania Academy (LSA) of Kolkata secured the first position in the Far East Zone with their tally being six points winning all three rounds straightaway. St. Capitanio Silchar, the Runners up team, secured four points, losing only to LSA in the third round. Last year Runners up Sai International School of Bhubaneswar and the Delhi Public School (DPS), Guwahati that shared points among them in their third round, and lost against LSA and St Capitanio respectively in the second round, both ended their journey with three points each. Teams from six schools participated in the Zonal U-14 Girls’ Chess Competition held at Guwahati Public School premises during 25 to 28 September.

Rajib Dhar, Honorary General Secretary of All Assam Chess Association has congratulated St. Capitanio Team in a message and said that he believes that this would help the cause of Chess in schools of Barak Valley. It may be mentioned here that CBSE is actively considering a proposal for introducing Chess in all CBSE schools within next few years.

Sister Arpita K, Principal of St. Capitanio herself was steering the chess team on regular basis. In a brief statement before the School Assembly while felicitating the Team she said that she is proud of their chess Team and hope that this experience will enhance the spirit of sports and team work among the students.
