Sobhraj – Sonicspawn’s ‘Silcharer Gaan’ is commoners’ daily conversation; simple, witty yet enjoyable

Last Dashami did you dance on a Tamil song – yes you did and the year before that too… The trend these days is to dance on high decibel Tamil songs and that is a reality. So is the fact that Silchar’s roads are jammed and people walk wherever they want. The more you roam around, the more you see fast food joints opening one after another. But, don’t they all serve the same food? Yes, they of course do. What happens when there is heavy rainfall? How many DSLRs do you spot these days in Silchar?

Many more such simple relatable conversations that we witness almost every day are blended with percussion and some energetic rhythms. This is what ‘Silcharer Gaan’ is all about.

Sobhraj Chakraborty’s lyrics composed by Abishek Goswami and produced at Sonicspawn studios, the song has already hit the social media wave and so far it has had a warm response. The song represents the current mood of the city. It says, Silchar is indeed the ‘city of love’ but at the same beat also sheds light on the potholes that one cannot ignore.

“We wanted to make a song which would make people dance,” says Sobhraj Chakraborty. He adds that they wanted to release the song last year itself, “We got dhaaki in the studio, we were all prepped up but then we could not do that because of some unavoidable circumstances. This year Abhishek sent me the tune and asked me to write something around it,” adds Chakraborty.

That was the starting point. From there on Chakraborty and Goswami had several sessions of brainstorming. “The idea was to create a theme song. While there are many videos and songs that talk about how great Silchar is we wanted to highlight the issues. Stuff that the Silcharians break their head on every day. So, in each and every sentence in the lyrics we tried to highlight an issue that troubles us,” Chakraborty asserts.

He informs that most of the issues highlighted in the song were conversations that he has been a part of. “To give you an example, my mother was telling me, you know there is a new fast food joint opening around the corner, I replied to her saying that we would still get the same food. A parent was telling me that his son roams around with DLSR and has no focus in his studies and that became a part of the lyrics…”

The chorus and percussions in the song were done by Sanjeev Chanda and Kashi Bishwanath while Abhishek Goswami’s Sonicspawn studios produced the song and the music video. Shobraj Chakraborty wrote the lyrics and did the rap that we hear throughout the song. “It is a collaborative project executed by all four of us,” says he

While the lyrics got a lot of appreciation the video received flak. The music video seamlessly exposes the loopholes, it is a collection of things that one cannot be proud of. “We did not make anyone act for this video. What you see is what was shot all around the city. The scenes that are offending people now are the actual reality and we must address them instead of ignoring,” opines Chakraborty.

The entire video was shot with different smartphones, informs Chakraborty. He is happy with the response he has received so far. Sobhraj Chakraborty’s elder brother Saptaraj is an award-winning filmmaker and is currently based out of Mumbai. “His feedback matters the most to me. I always share my first draft with him and basis his insights I move on. He did not say anything about the video but had positive feedback about the song and the lyrics,” Sobhraj concludes.
