Sonai: 15-Year-Old Dies By Suicide Over Mother’s Rebuke, Father Recounts Last Conversation

A 15-year-old boy allegedly died by suicide in New Ramnagar Part-I village of East Sonai in Cachar, following a minor family dispute and a reprimand from his mother, leaving the locality in deep shock.

The body of Sajjad Nur Barbhuiya, the second son of Tajim Uddin Barbhuiya, was found hanging from a tree branch at around 8 AM on Monday (March 2) by locals who had gone to graze cattle.

According to family members, Sajjad had been missing since Sunday evening. His mother said that on Sunday afternoon, an argument broke out between Sajjad and his 10-year-old younger brother over a bicycle. The dispute reportedly escalated into a brief scuffle, after which she intervened and mildly scolded Sajjad. While the younger brother returned home with her, Sajjad did not.

Despite waiting until evening and after Iftar, there was no sign of him. The family initially assumed he might have gone to a neighbour’s house, as he had done previously.

Recounting his last interaction with his son, father Tajim Uddin Barbhuiya said, “On Sunday morning while leaving for work, he told me to send the cow to the field for grazing as he had to go to school. I left for work with the cow and didn’t know whether he had gone to school or not. When I came back home, I found out that he had not returned. I thought maybe he was at the mosque for Tarabi namaz. We closed the door and slept, thinking he might be at my uncle’s house since my uncle’s son is of his age and they often spend time together. This morning when I did not find him at home, I went to the field with the cow and came to know that his body had been found hanging from a tree.”

Upon receiving information, police from Sonai Police Station reached the spot. A forensic team collected necessary samples from the scene. In the presence of a magistrate, a preliminary investigation was carried out and the body was sent for post-mortem to Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

Police stated that further clarity regarding the exact cause of death is expected after the post-mortem report is received.
