Sonapur Tunnel partially opens for one-way traffic as clearing operations progress
In an update provided by the East Jaintia Hills Police on Twitter, it has been announced that the Sonapur Tunnel is now partially open for one-way traffic movement. However, commuters are advised to exercise patience and refrain from overtaking, as it may lead to further delays for everyone involved.
Earlier in the day, at 9:47 am, the East Jaintia Hills Police, Meghalaya had posted on twitter about a mudslide near the Sonapur Tunnel, resulting in significant disruption of vehicular traffic. Consequently, the traffic between Silchar and Guwahati had to be suspended temporarily. To tackle the situation, two excavators were promptly deployed to clear the debris and restore the flow of vehicles.
With the region expected to experience heavy rainfall in the upcoming days, drivers are urged to exercise caution while traveling on National Highway 06. The inclement weather adds further challenges to the ongoing clearing operations, making it crucial for motorists to remain vigilant and adhere to all safety precautions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning for the Northeast region, highlighting the presence of a trough from North Bihar to Central Chhattisgarh, extending up to 3.1 km above mean sea level. This weather pattern is anticipated to bring moisture incursion due to strong low-level southerly/southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal towards Northeast India.
As a result, the IMD predicts fairly widespread to widespread rainfall activity, accompanied by heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms with lightning, and gusty winds over the next five days. Specifically, Assam and Meghalaya have been placed under a yellow alert from June 17 to June 21. During this period, these regions can expect light to moderate rainfall in most areas, with isolated instances of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds at isolated places are also predicted.
The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have advised residents and travelers to stay updated with weather forecasts and road conditions. It is essential to exercise caution and prioritise safety while traveling in the affected areas.
