Speeding tipper knocks down man on Mahasadak

A 60-year-old man died after he was crushed under the wheels of a speeding tipper on the East-West corridor (Mahasadak) near Dolu bazar under Udharbond constituency in southern Assam’s Cachar district early on Wednesday morning.

The deceased Shankar Lal Dey was a resident of Dolu Basti in Cachar district and was a tea-seller by profession.

According to sources, the accident took place around 6:25 am this morning when the tipper  hit Shankar, who was near a road divider on Mahasadak with full force. He was about to set up his tea-stall near Dolu bazar, around 18km from Silchar. As a result, Shankar received critical injuries, especially on his head and legs.

Onlookers immediately gathered on the spot and rushed Shankar to Borkhola primary health centre. Considering his condition, he was thereafter shifted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital. However, he could not survive long and succumbed to his injuries after some time in the intensive care unit of the hospital, sources said.

Meanwhile, local residents nabbed the tipper driver after the mishap and beat him. Besides, the irate mob did not let the other tippers ply through the road. Receiving the information about the incident, police reached the spot following which the driver R. Bhumij was handed over to them.

The driver and the tipper were thereafter brought to Borkhola police station. The other tippers, which remained stranded following the incident, were later allowed after around three hours.

The post-mortem of the dead body was done at the hospital after which it was handed over to his family members.
