Speeding truck runs over a Meherpur resident at Sonai Road killing her

A speeding truck hit a woman pedestrian at Sonai Road adjacent to Mizoram House on Thursday evening. The truck loaded with LPG cylinders was approaching from Borkhala filling station towards Mizoram and tried to evade from the spot after running over the woman who was crossing the road at that time. The woman was rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital and diagnosed brought dead by the doctors. The locals were able to stop the truck and informed the police. The driver was identified to be a resident of the Kabuganj area.

However, eyewitnesses said that the incident took place due to sand and stones piled up on the side of the road. Barak Bulletin recently wrote a story (Read Here: Death Trap In Silchar: Building Materials Kept On Public Roads, The New Normal?) about the building materials piled up on roadsides in Silchar and even had mentioned how it might lead to serious road mishaps anytime. Speaking to us the administrative officials showed a negligent attitude and told us they won’t voluntarily take action against the defaulters unless someone complained to them about the building materials kept on roadsides. We also mentioned how politically backed up people are behind the big construction works taking place in the heart of the city due to which not many people dare to raise their voice against them.

Coming back to the accident, the truck was seized by the traffic police. On behalf of traffic police, Shantanu Das said after the accident in the evening, the people of the area stopped the truck and informed them. Immediately traffic police officers reached the spot and brought the truck to Sadar Police station. Police officials will later visit the spot and make interrogations about the incident as necessary.

Eyewitnesses said several shops in the Sonai Road area which deal with sand and stones pile them up on the roadside. Many fear that the deceased woman was a victim of it. The truck’s wheel went over her.

The accident has once again proved how speeding trucks on the streets of Silchar City and the pile of sand and stones kept on roadsides have become a death trap for the common man. Many people have recently died due to deadly truck accidents in the valley when the eight and ten wheelers ran over them like a satan. However, the administration did not take any strict action almost in all the cases except a few checks here and there.

In the same way, during the winter season, sand and stones are kept on the roadsides due to building work going on in almost every part of the city. The administration is not able to facilitate and control it either.
