SpiceJet cancels all its flights, Indigo cancels Silchar – Bangalore; Air India to operate Silchar – Kolkata twice a week
Amid the spike of COVID cases and owing to stricter COVID protocols and lockdowns, the air passenger movement to and fro Barak Valley has badly hit this month, an airport official said on Friday.
As per official sources, the airport which witnessed a footfall of up to 1500 passengers daily before the second wave had hit, is now facilitating only 100-150 passengers. On Friday, only 161 passengers arrived at Silchar airport against 119 passengers who flew out of Silchar.
Following the reduction in patronage, the airlines are now taking to cancel the flights. Out of 7 scheduled flights at Silchar on Friday, 5 were cancelled.
“FlySpiceJet has cancelled all its flights w.e.f 21.05.21 to 05.06.2021 & IndiGo has cancelled its flight 6E 6651/6652 till 31.05.2021 due to operational reasons,” Silchar airport authorities informed on Friday, announcing the cancellation.
The Indigo flight which has been cancelled till 31st May operates between Silchar and Bengaluru. It can be mentioned here that, Indigo’s Flight no. 6E7957/794 between Silchar and Shillong has already been cancelled by the airlines, last week, till further notice.
On the other hand, Air India airlines, operating between Silchar and Kolkata, has reduced its frequency and will operate only twice a week on Wednesday & Saturday till further notice.
“Passengers are requested to contact the concerned Airlines for detailed information & rescheduling” an AAI authority mentioned. Meanwhile, two IAF AN32 aircraft shipped a consignment of 250 D type cylinders to the Airport Authority of India (AAI) at Silchar airport on Friday.
Airport sources maintained, the consignment was handed over to the officials of the Government of Manipur and were transported to Manipur by road. “Airports Authority of India, Silchar extended all necessary support and ensured smooth handling and quick delivery of the cargo,” official sources said.
“We have received the first consignment of 250 D type cylinders out of the order of 2000 cylinders placed by Govt. These cylinders were received at Silchar today & they will reach Imphal tomorrow. The expenses for these 250 cylinders is borne through the CSR contribution of NHIDCL,” Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh wrote over Twitter.
