Sribhumi Gynaecologist Accused of Child Trafficking Acting as a Middleman
A gynaecologist from Sribhumi has been accused of child trafficking after allegedly acting as a middleman in an illegal adoption process. A case has been registered against Dr Niladri Shekhar Das at Sribhumi Sadar Police Station, and he is currently absconding.
According to reports, a five-month pregnant woman had approached Dr Das at Sribhumi Civil Hospital seeking an abortion. However, the doctor discouraged her and assured her assistance with the delivery.
Four months later, he allegedly took the woman to a private healthcare facility, Jeevan Jyoti, in a secluded area in Nilambazar, where she delivered the baby. It is further alleged that Dr Das handed over the newborn girl to another person in exchange for a hefty sum.
Acting on confidential information, the district’s Child Protection Unit conducted a raid and rescued the infant, who is now in the custody of the Child Welfare Committee. The Sribhumi district administration has also launched an inquiry into the matter.
Priyanka Yumnam, in-charge of the Child Protection Unit, stated, “The doctor violated child adoption laws by acting as a mediator. Instead of following the legal CARA (Central Adoption Resource Authority) process, he facilitated an illegal adoption. An FIR has been lodged, and further investigations are underway.”
“During the investigations, we found that the doctor acted as a mediator between the biological mother and those who wanted to adopt the child. Being a learned person, he should know about the legal procedure and suggested lawful adoption. Instead of following the legal process, he disregarded the law and facilitated an unlawful adoption. An FIR has been lodged, and the matter will be thoroughly investigated,” Yumnam concluded.
