Sribhumi Police Shoot Smuggler Linked to 70 Illegal Border Crossings
In a dramatic encounter, Karimganj Police shot a man named Dilwar Hussain in the leg on Saturday near the India-Bangladesh border in Patharkandi. Hussain, who hails from Dharmanagar in Tripura, allegedly facilitated illegal entry of Bangladeshi nationals into India for years.
Police apprehended Hussain earlier at Karimganj Railway Station after finding multiple Bangladeshi contacts on his phone. During interrogation, he confessed to smuggling over 70 people from Bangladesh into Assam and Tripura. He revealed that the crossings were carried out through a secret route near Fulkandi under Patharkandi Police Station.
A joint team from Karimganj and Patharkandi Police took Hussain to the border area to verify the route. However, the situation escalated when Hussain allegedly tried to snatch a police officer’s revolver. Despite warning shots fired into the air, he did not back down, forcing police to shoot him in the leg.
Both Hussain and a police officer, who was injured during the scuffle, are now undergoing treatment at Patharkandi Hospital.
Speaking about the incident, Karimganj SP stated, “He admitted to bringing dozens of Bangladeshis to India through the border areas. Today, when police were showing him the locations, he attempted to grab a service weapon, which led to the shooting.”
Hussain is believed to have been operating for a long time, using the porous border areas to bring illegal migrants into India. His operations reportedly spanned both Assam and Tripura, raising concerns about the security of border regions.
Police have launched an in-depth investigation to identify others involved in the illegal smuggling network. More details are expected as the investigation progresses.
