Independence Day, which will be celebrated tomorrow, marks the country’s festival of freedom. As the nation gears up for this glorious occasion, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has announced various medals to recognise exceptional service from each state of India.
In Assam, 13 police personnel have been selected for the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM) in the Police Force. Among them are SSP, Cachar, Numal Mahatta, and two officers from the 6th Assam Police Battalion, Kathal — Assistant Commandant Nabin Chandra Sharma and ABSI Rabindra Singha.
The Medal for Meritorious Service is given to police personnel with an outstanding record of integrity, efficiency, and dedication. It honours officers with exceptional leadership, discipline, and hard work over many years, contributing greatly to public safety and security.
In a press release, SSP Numal Mahatta described the recognition as “a collective achievement of my team in Cachar Police.” The release stated that since taking charge, he has implemented targeted crime-control measures, improved intelligence gathering, and worked to strengthen police-community relations.

Under his leadership, Cachar Police have carried out operations against narcotics trafficking, cross-border smuggling, and rural law-and-order issues.
