Stranded without food for hours; The Silchar – Guwahati road via Shillong continues to be a nightmare

At a time when the railway connectivity from Barak Valley is already affected due to the torrential rain in May this year, repeated incidents of landslides along the NH-6 which connects Silchar to Guwahati via Shillong route, has lead Barak Valley into a landlocked territory.

The Shillong road was again unmotorable on Thursday after a few landslips were reported in last few hours. In addition to it, Malidor-Rattacherra section has also gone undrivable due to its dilapidated road.

Trucks, busses and small vehicles remained stranded on the road for several hours since Wednesday night.

Meghalaya police have informed that restoration work is going on and as a result of this vehicles have got piled up in both directions of the damaged section. “Our team is working to ease the jam as quickly as possible with top most priority given to emergency vehicles especially ambulance,” said East Jaintia Hills police.

Angshuman Paul, who is traveling on a bus in the section, informed to Barak Bulletin that there is no source of food materials and drinking water in the area and passengers are suffering a lot.
“There are many passengers who are traveling with patients. Many others have trains or planes to catch. We are stranded here for a long” said Paul.

Due to torrential rain, the said road stretch is facing multiple landslides over the last few weeks.

Cachar district administration has informed that the blockade portion on the Assam side has been rectified. “Blockade portion of NH – 06 at Kalaincherra Grant near Malidahar has been restored by NHIDCL for smooth movement of vehicles including loaded heavy vehicles. NHIDCL is at work at the site to ensure that vehicular movement is not disrupted” DC Cachar in a tweet said.
