Student Outcry Prompts Transfer of Assam University Police Outpost Incharge
An official order from the Office Of The Superintendent Of Police, Cachar, Silchar, Assam informed that Adhunika Baruah, I/C Assam University Police Outpost had been transferred and would join her new place of posting by today itself. This order comes after a group of students from Assam University protested against the outpost’s alleged misconduct and misbehavior towards locals and students alike.
Students at Assam University were agitated following an incident at the University Police Outpost, where authorities allegedly mistreated students who were there to file reports. After an alleged unlawful arrest, students began demanding an apology and even allowed a 12-hour window for action.
The said incident involves Pulak Namasudra, who visited the outpost to report stolen electronic devices. However, instead of receiving assistance, Namasudra and his companion were reportedly mistreated by the police. Additionally, Asim Biswas, a scholar accompanying Namasudra, was allegedly unlawfully arrested and subjected to physical assault by the authorities.
In response to the incident, a group of students gathered outside the outpost to protest the alleged unlawful arrest and demand the release of Biswas, along with an apology from the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the patrol post.
The situation escalated further when Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Subrata Sen arrived at the scene to engage in discussions with the protesting students. It was agreed upon that action would be taken within 12 hours of the discussions. However, according to a statement from one of the student, no action was taken even after the 12-hour window which forced the student union to reach the SP Office to continue their discussion in this regard.
Following the whole shenanigan on February 26, an official order came from Office Of The Superintendent Of Police, Cachar, Silchar, Assam. The order reads “In the interest of public service WSI (UB) Adhunika Baruah, I/C University O.P. of Dwarbond P/S is hereby closed to O.R. with immediate effect until further order. She will join her new place of posting by today without fail.”
This incident sheds light on a recurring pattern of misconduct at the patrol post, with locals also reportedly facing mistreatment when seeking assistance with their cases. Such behavior raises concerns about where individuals should turn to in times of need if they are subjected to such treatment within a police outpost.
