Students of Assam University Reclaim the Night: Show Solidarity Against Violence on Women

The Assam University Students’ Union has strongly condemned the tragic incident at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, where a post-graduate trainee was reported to have been raped and murdered. In response, the students held a candlelight march last night to show their solidarity and demand justice. The rally, which involved around 250 students, mostly women, was a significant demonstration against such inhumane acts.

The march began at 10 PM from the Union Building and made its way to the main gate of the university. Participants walked in silence, each holding a candle to honour the memory of the victim and to express their outrage at the crime. The atmosphere was both somber and determined, reflecting the students’ deep commitment to seeking justice.

The Assam University Students’ Union is resolutely opposed to all forms of violence, particularly those targeting women. Through a press release, Assam University Students Union informed that this candlelight march was not only a protest against the specific incident at R.G. Kar Medical College but also a broader appeal for action against any form of violence in society. The students, especially the female ones, stand united in their fight against such cruel acts.

The union has called on all educational institutions to implement measures to ensure the safety and dignity of students, with a particular focus on women. They emphasise the need for vigilance and proactive steps to prevent similar incidents in the future. The students are determined to stand against any acts of violence and support the cause of justice.

Assam University Students’ Union, reaffirmed their commitment to advocating for justice, safety, and human rights. They stressed that the union will continue to raise its voice against any actions that threaten these essential values.

The candlelight march has highlighted the urgent need for increased safety measures and better protection for students. The Assam University Students’ Union’s efforts serve as a reminder of the ongoing fight against violence and the importance of solidarity in seeking justice.

In a statement, AUSU President Subham Roy said that from past few days, they have been showing their support against this horrific act that has shocked the entire nation. He emphasised their aim to change the belief that women should not be outside at night. They want to restore the right for women in India to be out at night without fear.

Roy also pointed out that such incidents pose a threat even in their own community, including at Assam University. Their demonstration was a protest against all such incidents, both past and present, and a hope for a future without them. He believes that if people speak out against every incident now and refuse to ignore them, it can help prevent many future occurrences.

The union’s actions highlights their dedication to ensuring that educational institutions become safe havens for all students. As they continue to advocate for change, their message remains clear: violence against women and all forms of brutality must be confronted and eradicated.
