Super Division: Defending champions United club returns to winning ways after defeating favourite Itkhola

The players are finding their form back as Silchar DSA organised Super Division cricket tournament is progressing. Defending champions United Club has returned to winning ways after having an abysmal outing in their first match. Like a house of cards, United Club’s batters crumbled while facing Dibakar Johori’s express bowling.

Today, the Janiganj based Club defeated Itkhola AC, a club that the experts have identified as favourites to win the tournament. The team batting first so far in the tournament was found under pressure. So the Itkhola captain won the toss and decided to field first. Their bowlers, however, failed to rake in benefits from the morning moisture on the pitch.

United Club’s openers Sukanto Dey (31) and Pradeep Sarkar (53) went on to put a flawless 73 runs opening partnership. Under pressure Itkhola AC captain Sadik Imram made frequent bowling changes and eventually he was given a breakthrough when Sukanto Dey got out. Ithkola made a comeback as they managed to send last year’s best batsman Raju Das (1) to the pavilion. Worrying signs for United as Das has failed to score more than one run in both the matches the team played so far. Prasenjit Sarkar (0) also got out early.

When it looked like another collapse, experienced Mosarob Hussain Laskar (35) supported Pradeep Sarkar and both stiched a partnership. Abhik Lala scored 31 while batting in the lower order and it turned out to be a significant contribution for the defending champions. Despite the good innings from a few batsmen, United Club managed to put only 189 runs on the board in their 40 overs.

Left-arm spinner Prakash Bhagat (2 – 27) was the best bowler for Itkhola AC. Captain Saddik Imran also picked up two wickets. Recently returned from Dubai, Rajasthan Royals’ net bowler Rahul Singh failed to match expectations in his first game. He managed to pick a wicket.

While chasing what can be termed as a par score, Itkhola lost its opener Biswajit Bhattacharjee early. But Aman Kumar (27) and Subhajit Paul (45) were batting well. In the first seven overs, they were scoring at the rate of 10 runs per over. Left arm spinner, Nirjhar Das got United back in the match after dismissing Aman.

Despite getting a good start, the middle order could not capitalise. Ranji Star, Rajdeep Das (27) did get a start but could not convert it to a big innings. From 115 after 17 overs Itkhola got all out after scoring 168 runs in 33.3 overs. Sukanto Dey and Fazlur Rahman picked up two wickets each to secure a victory by 21 runs.

Tomorrow, Town Club will play Club Oasis.
