Sushmita Dev leads Trinamool Congress’ protest against Price-rise in Silchar; “We are not scared of the BJP,” she says
According to a Monetary Policy Statement released by the Reserve Bank of India on August 5, 2022, the Consumer Price Index inflation was eased to 7.0 per cent (year-on-year, y-o-y) during May-June 2022 from 7.8 per cent in April, although it persists above the upper tolerance band. With this inflation in the domestic market, prices of various commodities also became higher and at the same time, GST on various packaged products also rose.
Voicing against this unprecedented price rise, the Trinamool Congress has held a massive rally today in Silchar. Rajya Sabha MP, Sushmita Dev was leading the protest march along with the supporters of the party. Hundreds of people took to the streets with her and marched across the main roads of Silchar town.
Starting from the party office at Club Road, the rally marched through the main parts of town and later they came for a sit-in demonstration in the footsteps of the Khudiram Bose statue in Club Road. The enraged party cadres raised slogans against the rising prices of LPG cylinders, petrol-diesel and other products.
MP Sushmita Dev, who was leading the protest said, “Hundreds of Trinamool supporters have joined this protest today because everyone is frustrated with this price rise. When the BJP government came to power in 2014, they came with the promise to fight against the price rise of that time. But what about domestic gas cylinder prices today? This government has imposed excessive GST on packaged goods and this is a direct blow to the poor and the middle-class”.
The MP also said, “This protest will continue further and not just in Silchar Town but in every block. If anyone can fight against this government’s uncertain price rise it is the Trinamool Congress. We are not scared of the BJP and we will continue this protest against this price rise and inflation”. After a long demonstration, the protesters ended their agenda for the day.
