Suspected militant arrested from Lakhipur; cash, mobile, ATM cards recovered

A suspected militant was apprehended from Dilkhush village under Lakhipur constituency in Cachar district on Monday night.

The militant was identified as Lorens Sinsing (26), a resident of Manipur.

According to sources, police carried out an operation on the basis of a tip-off on Monday night at Dilkhush village, around 32km from Silchar, and nabbed Lorens. Rs. 34,500 in cash, three ATM cards and a mobile phone was recovered from Lorens’ possession, sources said.

Police sources said Lorens is perhaps associated with any militant outfit and came to extort money at Dilkhush village, where a significant population comprises businessmen and traders. This has apparently come to light after going through the mobile phone which was recovered from Lorens, police sources said.

Local residents, too, suspected that Lorens had come to the village to obtain money from traders through extortion. Dilkhush is inhabited by a large number of timber traders, who collect wood and timber from jungles along the Assam-Manipur border areas.
