TMC Holds Protest in Silchar Against “BJP’s Divisive Politics”

The Assam Pradesh Trinamool Congress (TMC) organised a protest on Saturday (August 2) in Silchar and other districts of Assam as part of their state-wide movement against the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) alleged divisive politics. The demonstration was held at the base of the Shahid Khudiram Bose statue in Silchar town, where local TMC leaders gathered to raise their voice against the BJP-led government.

The protest comes following the direction of West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC leader Mamata Banerjee. She had earlier urged the Assam unit of the party to launch district-level protests against what she called the BJP’s “politics of division”.

TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev, who led the protest in Silchar, said, “Our leader, Mamata Banerjee, on 21st July announced that TMC will protest across Assam against BJP’s divisive policies. Today we have started protests in Silchar as well as in other districts. This movement will continue.”

She criticised the BJP for failing to fulfil its promises to the people of Assam and India. “They came to power by giving big promises. But none were fulfilled. Instead, they are now trying to divide people based on language, religion, and caste,” Dev said while speaking to the media.

Sushmita Dev also mentioned incidents in Delhi, Rajasthan, and Gurgaon where Bengalis were reportedly harassed. “In several places, Bengalis are being attacked, stripped, and beaten. We condemn this strongly,” she said.

She further added that the BJP had promised safety to Hindu Bengalis under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), but only two people have received citizenship so far. Similarly, the BJP had told Assamese people that the Biplab Sharma Committee would secure their rights, but no real steps have been taken.

“They have done nothing for anyone. Now, with elections coming, they are doing evictions and spreading hate to secure votes. But TMC will not let this go unchallenged. We will fight this divisive agenda in every corner of Assam,” she added.

The TMC’s protest is likely to continue in the coming days across different districts of the state as part of their campaign to unite people against what they call the BJP’s “vote bank politics”.
