This is the third wave of floods in Barak Valley and South Assam. Earlier in May to June also the excessive rainfall and cyclone Remal had wreaked havoc in Barak Valley. People in Silchar are still reeling from the aftermath of the 2022 floods. Last month, an increase in the water levels of Longai, Kushiyara and Singla devastated the Karimganj district. Karimganj is among the worst affected districts in the state according to the State Disaster Management Authority. Several embankments and dykes have been breached in Hailakandi and people are moving in search of higher grounds. Areas in North Hailakandi, Berakhalpar, Mohanpur etc which have never seen floods before are now panicking for shelter.
