Two injured in accident on NH-6; road blocked for two hours
Residents of Kalinagar and neighbouring areas blocked National Highway-6 on Friday for two hours venting their ire over a mishap in which a woman and her four-year-old daughter were injured.
According to onlookers, the accident took place around 11:00am this morning when Elasun Bibi (30) and her daughter Parvin Begum Laskar were hit by a speeding cruiser on the highway at Kalinagar, around 20km from Silchar. As a result, both of them sustained critical injuries.
Elasun and her daughter were walking on the roadside when they were hit by the cruiser which was on its way to Silchar, locals said.
Residents gathered on the spot after which both Elasun and her daughter were rushed to Sarojini primary health centre at Kalinagar. Thereafter, the highway was blocked by a large number of agitated people, who demanded adequate compensation for the women’s family. Hundreds of vehicles remained stranded on the road because of the blockade.
Receiving the information of the blockade, a team of police from Panchgram and Katakhal reached the spot and spoke to the enraged residents. Algapur MLA Nijam Uddin Choudhury along with Kalinagar gaon panchayat president Shamim Ahmed reached there after sometime.
The blockade was withdrawn around 1:00pm after assurance was given to the residents that their demand would be fulfilled. Sources said Elasun was shifted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) this evening, but considering her health condition, she was being taken to Shillong. Parvin was at the intensive care unit of SMCH, as per last available reports.
