Two Mizoram Youths Get 10 Years Jail for Drug Trafficking at Silchar Airport

Two youths from Mizoram were sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for attempting to smuggle methamphetamine through Silchar Airport. The verdict was delivered on Tuesday (June 24) by Judge Biprajit Roy of the NDPS Court in Cachar.

The convicts, Joseph Lalnunmawia (23), a resident of Vengchak in Aizawl, and F. Lalmangaizuala (33) from Tuikual North, Aizawl, were apprehended on October 19, 2023, while they were attempting to board a flight to Kolkata from Kumbhirgram Airport. During a routine security check, airport security officials found four plastic packets containing 4.08 kg of methamphetamine concealed in their luggage.

The airport authorities immediately handed them over to Udharbond Police Station. A case was registered, and following investigation, the police filed charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

After a thorough trial, the court found both accused guilty under Section 22(c) of the NDPS Act. Each was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs. 1 lakh. In default of payment, they will have to serve an additional six months in jail.
