Woman Mugged During Morning Walk in Silchar, Locals Raise Alarm Over Rising Crime

A 68-year-old woman was attacked and robbed during her early morning walk in the Meherpur Durgapalli area of Silchar on Saturday (June 28). The snatcher fled with one of her gold ornaments after a violent scuffle, leaving her injured.

The victim, Nirupama Saha, recounted the ordeal to reporters on Sunday. “I stepped out around 4:30 AM on Saturday to pluck flowers for Bipadnashini Puja. A boy in a white T-shirt kept crossing me in the lane. He crossed me several times, walking past me, which raised my suspicion. When I asked him where he lived, he claimed to be from near Rahim Store (Sonai Road) and said he was waiting to take out a car from someone named Lal Babu’s garage,” she said.

A few minutes later, the same youth attacked her from behind, attempting to snatch her gold chain. “He tried to strangle me while pulling the chain. I held it tightly and covered it with my housecoat. I screamed, but it was too early for anyone to hear. During the struggle, he managed to pull off my right earring and fled,” she added. Nirupama Saha fell to the ground and injured her right arm in the process. Her family later took her to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment. A formal complaint has been lodged at the Ghungoor police outpost.

Residents of Meherpur have expressed serious concern over what they describe as a recent surge in thefts and snatching incidents. “We’ve been living here for decades and never witnessed such frequent crimes. But in the past month alone, there have been multiple cases—stolen mobiles, attempted break-ins, even missing sandals,” said Subir Chandra Saha, husband of the victim. He was joined by other concerned locals, including Azim Uddin Khan, Arup Kumar Biswas, Bhanu Deb, Riaz Uddin Ahmed, and Liaqat Ali, who urged the district police to act swiftly.

They have appealed for increased patrolling and the arrest of those behind the incidents to restore a sense of safety in the locality.
