Cachar: 150 Cartons of Whisky Seized at Lailapur Border, Driver Arrested

Police seized a large quantity of liquor during a routine naka checking operation at the Lailapur Police Patrol Outpost on the Assam-Mizoram border in Dholai district on Wednesday (June 3). The operation was part of an ongoing drive against smuggling activities in the border region.

According to police sources, officers intercepted a truck bearing registration number AS 01 RC 2950 at the checking point. The vehicle was reportedly travelling from Meghalaya towards Mizoram. During a search of the truck, police recovered around 150 cartons of Royal Stag whisky concealed inside the vehicle.

Police said the liquor had allegedly been transported without valid documentation. While Royal Stag whisky is legally manufactured and sold in Meghalaya, the consignment was reportedly being carried to Mizoram without the required papers. Since the sale and distribution of liquor are regulated in Mizoram, police suspect the consignment was intended for illegal distribution in the state.

The driver of the truck, identified as Anwar Hussain Laskar (28), son of Sofiur Uddin of the Sonai area, was arrested from the spot. Police seized the liquor consignment and initiated legal proceedings against him. According to officials, he was unable to produce valid documents for transporting the consignment.

The operation was led by Subhajit Dutta, in-charge of the Lailapur Police Patrol Outpost. The investigation is being supervised by Rajat Paul, Superintendent of Police, Crime Branch. Police said efforts are underway to identify others who may be linked to the alleged smuggling network.

A police official stated that such checking drives would continue in the future to curb the illegal transportation of liquor and narcotics through the border areas. The arrested individual is expected to be produced before a court as per legal procedure.
