Cachar Police Arrests Ex-DSP’s Son Among Two for Morally Policing Mentally Challenged Man in Silchar
Two individuals, including the son of a former Deputy Superintendent of Police of Cachar, have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a moral policing incident that took place in Silchar’s Ambicapatty area on November 14.
The incident occurred near a gym opposite Hitesh Biswas Road, where a man — said to be mentally challenged and accused of theft — was brutally assaulted. He was tied to a pole, beaten black and blue, stripped, and his face smeared with lime and ink. The assault unfolded in one of Silchar’s posh residential localities, as onlookers either remained silent or allegedly encouraged the attackers.
A bystander recorded the incident and uploaded the video online. After the footage went viral, Cachar Police registered a case and arrested two accused: Rajdeep Biswas of Chandmari Road, Tarapur, and 29-year-old Purav Sen of Ambicapatty. Police sources confirmed that Purav Sen is the son of a former DSP of Cachar.
Both accused were produced before the court on Thursday, December 4, and subsequently remanded to judicial custody.
Though some online and offline voices praised the act as “mob justice”, such applause overlooks a fundamental truth: in a nation with a working judiciary and law enforcement, the only legitimate path to justice is through the courts and the rule of law.
